Who we are

Registry Africa (Pty) Ltd is the official Registry Operator for the .africa geographic Top-Level Domain (gTLD). Our website address is: https://registry.africa. We operate as a “Thick Registry,” meaning we maintain the authoritative database of registrant, administrative, billing, and technical contact information for all .africa domain names.

Data Collection & WHOIS

In accordance with ICANN regulations and our Published Policies, we collect personal data including names, physical addresses, emails, and phone numbers during the domain registration process. This data is used for WHOIS publication to ensure the transparency and stability of the DNS, though registrants may elect to use Privacy or Proxy services to mask their personal details from public view.

Cookies & Technical Data

When you access the Registry Portal or our website, we use session and preference cookies to facilitate secure login and maintain your settings. For security purposes, we log incoming IP addresses and browser user agent strings to prevent unauthorized access and mitigate domain tampering through our Registry Lock services.

Who we share your data with

We are contractually obligated to share registration data with certain third parties, including:

  • ICANN: For regulatory compliance and escrow requirements.
  • Data Escrow Providers (e.g., DENIC): To ensure data is not at risk of loss and can be recovered in emergency conditions.
  • Law Enforcement: We may disclose personal data to comply with legal obligations, prevent unlawful activity, or protect public safety.

How long we retain your data

Data associated with a domain registration is retained for the duration of the domain’s lifecycle and for a period thereafter as required by ICANN’s data retention policies and local South African laws (such as POPIA) for auditing and legal defense purposes.

What rights you have over your data

As a data subject, you have the right to access, rectify, or request the deletion of your personal data. However, certain data is mandatory for domain maintenance. If you are an EPP registrant, you must manage these rights through your accredited registrar. Direct requests to the Registry can be sent to our Data Protection Officer at dp@registry.net.za.
